Choir — St Mary’s Church, Bideford
We lead worship in music, from traditional hymnody to accessible contemporary songs. New singers welcome (adults and juniors)
When & Where
Rehearsal | Friday 6.00 pm |
---|---|
Sunday | 9.30 am |
Occasional | Choral Evensong, civic services and festivals (Advent, Christmas, Easter, Remembrance) |
Junior voices welcome. Younger singers often start in our Treble Makers group and join services as they grow in confidence.
Music & Repertoire
- Hymns old and new; service settings and responses
- Anthems by composers from Tallis to Rutter
- Seasonal music for festivals and civic occasions
We follow the lectionary and work closely with the ministry team to support the theme of each service.
Join the Choir
We’re a friendly, supportive choir — sight‑reading helps, but you don’t need to be a confident reader to start. A short voice check with the Director of Music helps place you (S/A/T/B).
Who can join? | Adults and secondary‑age juniors. No audition in the formal sense; just a relaxed voice check. |
---|---|
What to bring | A pencil, a water bottle and enthusiasm. Music is provided. |

Weddings, Funerals & Special Services
The choir is available, subject to availability, to sing for weddings, funerals and civic services. We can advise on appropriate music and hymns.
- Hymn leadership and congregational support
- Anthem or solo items by request
- Organist/Director available to help plan music
Safeguarding & Standards
- All junior involvement follows the Parish Safeguarding Policy (leaders DBS‑checked)
- We encourage good vocal health and inclusive rehearsal practice
- We draw on RSCM resources and best practices for church music
We’d love to welcome you — whether you’re returning to singing or trying choir for the first time.
