A warm welcome, a hot drink and a friendly chat
On the second Saturday of every month, St Mary’s opens its doors for our community café. It is a relaxed, friendly morning with free tea, coffee and homemade cake, and above all, good company. Whether you pop in for five minutes on your way round town or settle in for the whole morning, there is a seat waiting for you.
We would love to see as many people as possible come through the door. Our café is all about bringing a little joy, sharing a chat and making new friends. If you are on your own, new to Bideford, or just fancy a sit down and a natter, you will be very welcome.

A different host each month
One of the things that makes our café special is that it is run by a different group each month. Each host brings their own welcome, and the donations given on the day help support their cause. For example:
- In March, our Mothers’ Union host, with cards for sale and a tombola.
- In May, our clergy roll up their sleeves to serve the tea and coffee, and bake all the cakes themselves. A lovely chance to get to know them over a cuppa!
- In June, our Bookworms take over, with a treasure trove of books for sale.
- In July, our Pastoral Team are on hand for a friendly chat or a listening ear.
- In August, our children’s choir, the Treblemakers, host the café.
- In September, the café raises money for Alzheimer’s Society, supporting people living with dementia and those who care for them.
- In December, our very special Christmas café is filled with festive treats and carols from our children’s choir, the Treblemakers.
So every visit is a little different, and every cup of tea helps to support something worthwhile. Keep an eye on our events and social media to see who is hosting next.
What we serve
- Freshly brewed tea and coffee (decaf available)

St Mary’s Café is a place to belong. You will find friendly conversation and a kind welcome, space to sit quietly if you prefer, and noticeboards with community information and support. You may even catch the choir practising! If you would like someone to pray with you, please ask one of our hosts.
Accessibility and safeguarding
- Step-free entrance and an accessible toilet
- Seating with back support, and space for buggies and wheelchairs
- All our team follow our Parish Safeguarding Policy and are DBS checked where required
Get involved
Could your group host the café for a month? Or would you like to help as a baker, brewer, welcomer or washer-up? Volunteering is flexible, usually once a month, and we provide a short welcome and hygiene briefing. Speak to one of our hosts during the café or contact the Parish Office on 01237 472551.
You can also help by baking a cake (please label any allergens) or simply by spreading the word and bringing a friend or neighbour along.
