Answering the Call: Charles’ Story of Faith

We’re always encouraged by the different journeys of faith within our church family, and how God continues to work in people’s lives in quiet and powerful ways.

Charles has been part of the St Mary’s community, growing in faith, building friendships, and taking important steps in his Christian journey, including confirmation.

We will miss seeing Charles in church, and especially hearing him read the readings so thoughtfully. While we’re sad to see him go, we understand that this next chapter is where he needs to be, and we send him with our love and prayers. We wish him every happiness in his new church and community.

In his own words, Charles shares something of his story—from early beginnings, through challenges, to finding a place of belonging and faith here at St Mary’s.

Hi, my name is Charles Warner.

I have always believed in being a Christian. Back when I was living in Bolton, my parents never really let me develop my faith—it was always more about my siblings. We went to church a few times while we were there, and it was where I was baptised.

We stopped going when we moved to Devon, especially after my grandpa passed away in 2015.

Then a turning point came when I moved into care. It felt like I had been a prisoner in my parents’ house, and then an angel came along in the form of Sally Strutt, who helped me move out. During that time, I kept praying to the Lord Jesus Christ, again and again, and He answered my prayers. I will forever be grateful to Him for that.

After that, I looked around Bideford and began thinking about returning to church and continuing my faith. I found St Mary’s and started going to services. Over time, I met people in the congregation who helped me grow in my faith and continue believing in Jesus Christ.

It was at St Mary’s that I met Paul, and we became best friends. I also met Karen there and made a good friendship with her too.

After some time, I asked about being confirmed, and eventually I was. It took several long and rigorous sessions each week, but I completed my confirmation at St Peter’s. My friend Paul was confirmed at the same time, which meant a lot to me—to have someone alongside me on that journey.

I’m so glad I did it, and I will continue to grow in my faith in the years to come.

I also want to say a heartfelt goodbye, as I have now left Devon and live in Bedfordshire. If anyone is ever in my area, please feel free to come and see me.

God bless, and may the Lord be with you always.

Charles
