St Mary’s Mission Community in Bideford, North Devon, is looking to recruit a Children’s and Families Worker.
St Mary’s is a friendly and welcoming Anglican parish church with a real heart for our community. We have a large parish, including five primary schools within our Mission Community, and we desire to grow in our ministry and outreach to children and families in our area.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, passionate and committed Christian with experience working with children and families. You will lead, oversee and grow our ministry for 0-11s and their families in the church and community, as well as oversee and pastor the volunteer children’s team.

- Lead and administrate a weekly Sunday morning Junior Church; nurture and develop a relationship with Jesus among the children who attend
- Connect with local primary schools and enthusiastically promote church events; assist with collective worship
- Pioneer a regular after-school club in church for primary age children
- Nurture and affirm our current children’s team as well as recruit new helpers

Job Description: Children and Families Worker (part time)
Employed by: The PCC of St Mary’s Church Bideford
Reporting to: The Rector
Aims and objectives:
- Lead and administrate a weekly Sunday morning Junior Church session; nurture and develop a relationship with Jesus among the children who attend
- Go into our local primary schools working alongside the clergy/Open The Book team and enthusiastically promote church children and families events; assist with assemblies and school services
- Start and lead a weekly after school club in church for primary age children
- Nurture and affirm our current children’s team as well as recruit new helpers
- Keep the church family informed of children’s and families news to aid prayer
- Be a known face at Music Makers (weekly) and Messy Church (monthly) – give notices, chat to parents, build relationships, encourage parents to come to other church activities and events
- Organise and run an annual holiday club in the summer/Easter holiday
- Build relationships with local parents not yet connected with church
- Be a part of the All Age team
- Supports the vision for the church redevelopment and listens to/communicates the needs of children/families within that
Person Specification:
Essential
- A committed evangelical with a personal and active relationship with Jesus, rooted in a lifestyle that reflects this• A sympathy and alignment with the Church of England
- A positive advocate for St Mary’s who worships at St Mary’s and enthusiastically promotes our church and our work among local children and families
- A heart for children and a passion to share the love of Jesus with them• Experience in children’s ministry in church and schools
- An excellent communicator and organised administrator with good people skills; able to prioritise and manage their own workload
- Proven leadership, management, administration and communication skills, in particular when interacting with the core age group of 0 – 11 year olds and their families
- Motivator and leader, with experience of working with volunteers and recruiting and leading a team
- A team player willing to play a full and supportive role in our staff team
- Willingness to work flexibly including occasional evenings and weekends
- Good I.T. skills, particularly in designing posters for advertising events and services and have good knowledge of communicating via social media
- Be up to date with current safeguarding legislation
Desirable
- Qualification in Children’s Work, Theology, teaching or any related area
- Experience of managing a budget and spending wisely
- Clean driving licence and car usage
Training:
A schedule of training will be agreed in the light of previous experience and gifting
Contract:
- Salary: £13 per hour for 15 hours per week for 42 weeks of the year
- Subject to a probationary period of 6 months and satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
- Hours: 15 hours per week across 2-3 working days, including Sunday. Additional hours may occasionally be required by mutual agreement
- Office space can be provided but much of the admin side of the job may be carried out at home if desired
- Reasonable expenses incurred in carrying out the role will be reimbursed
