Every summer, swifts return to our skies — screaming joyfully overhead and nesting in the towers of our oldest buildings. But UK swift numbers have fallen by over 60% in 30 years. They’re running out of places to call home.
We want to change that, right here at St Mary’s.
With the PCC’s blessing, we’re partnering with the Devon Swift Project to install nesting boxes in our belfry — joining churches like Exeter Cathedral, South Molton, Stoke, and Barnstaple. At Chumleigh, nesting pairs grew 50% in just three years after their boxes went up. Our tower could be next.
We’re raising £2,000 to make it happen. Every gift, large or small, helps build a lifeline for generations of swifts to come — and lets our church show, in a small but lovely way, that this place is for life in every sense. 🌿
